How India Middle East Europe Corridor will help India counter China’s BRI & Pakistan – watch video

Eastern Europe Journal 2 years ago

India Middle East Europe Corridor: At the recently concluded G20 Summit, one of the biggest takeaways with important geopolitical and economic implications was the announcement of the India Middle East Europe Corridor or the IMEC. The new corridor, the details of which are in works, is being seen as an answer to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
At its historic unveiling during the G20 Summit, PM Narendra Modi called the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor a “beacon of cooperation and innovation”. In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi said, “Charting a journey of shared aspirations and dreams, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor promises to be a beacon of cooperation, innovation, and shared progress. As history unfolds, may this corridor be a testament to human endeavour and unity across continents.”
So what is the India Middle East Europe Corridor project about? And how will it be a gamechanger for India? In this week’s episode of TOI Business Bytes, Professor Harsh V Pant, Vice President for Studies and Foreign Policy at Observer Research Foundation (ORF) shares some important economic and geopolitical benefits of this ambitious and mammoth project.

India Middle East Europe Corridor: How India Aims To Counter China, Pakistan – Explained | G20

Watch the video above to know why this new corridor is being called India and the world’s alternative to China’s BRI and how once ready it will help India counter not just China but also Pakistan.
“I think that Pakistan is being made almost redundant in India’s connectivity landscape. And this allows India to leverage economic benefits…China’s expansion of BRI has also constrained India. So on the one hand, you have Pakistan, on the other, you have China,” Professor Pant tells TOI.
“India, by involving like minded partners like Europe, US and some countries in the Middle East, is trying to make a push that India with its partnerships can leverage them for its economic advantages,” he adds.
Watch the video above to know the lessons India can learn from China’s BRI and why economic viability of the project would be key to its success.
