Social media campaign: UNESCO invites youth in South East Europe and Turkey to join #ThinkBeforeSharing campaign to celebrate Global Media and Information Literacy Week

WEBWIRE – Tuesday, October 19, 2021

On the occasion of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2021, UNESCO is inviting youth from South East Europe and Turkey to join an online campaign starting on 20 October and lasting until 31 October 2021, organized within UNESCO EU-funded project “Building Trust in Media in South East Europe and Turkey – Phase 2.”

The campaign targets specifically youth. “Through this campaign, we are aiming to give power to young people as messengers and educators of their peers with the objective of raising awareness about how to become media and information literate to avoid sharing disinformation and hate speech, among others,” said Adeline Hulin, Project Office at the UNESCO Brussels Office.

The hashtag of the campaign, #ThinkBeforeSharing, was launched in 2020 by UNESCO in partnership with the European Commission, Twitter, and the World Jewish Congress, to target in particular conspiracy theories related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, it is revived through this youth campaign in South East Europe and Turkey promoting MIL more broadly. “The idea here is to bring the message of the campaign, questioning and challenging online content, through the use of Media and Information Literacy skills,” added Adeline Hulin.

To participate, youth is invited to distribute the visuals that will be shared through UNESCOEU Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts starting from 20 October. The visuals bring questions and invites young people to respond providing their personal insights through text, video messages, photos, or memes.

The visuals will be posted at 9h, 12h, and 15h (CET) from 20 October on.
