India, UAE hold talks to advance India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC)
An Indian delegation visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 17th May to engage in discussions with key entities regarding the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC). This marks the first such visit following the announcement of the IMEEC in February. The project aims to create a trade corridor linking parts of Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
The prompt visit, occurring within three months of the agreement’s signing, underscores the high priority both India and the UAE place on the IMEEC initiative. The Corridor is designed to provide efficient alternative supply routes, enhancing logistics, generating efficiencies, and reducing costs. Both parties agreed to maintain ongoing discussions to facilitate the swift implementation of the agreement.
The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) is progressing with the inaugural visit of an Indian Inter-Ministerial Delegation to the UAE to discuss the India-UAE Intergovernmental Framework Agreement on IMEEC. Ambassador Sunjay Sudhir led the discussions with key UAE entities such as DP World UAE, AD Ports Group, and UAE Customs.
The Indian mission shared on X (formerly Twitter) that this visit is a significant step in realizing the IMEEC project, which will include two separate corridors: the east corridor connecting India to the Gulf and the northern corridor linking the Gulf to Europe. This structure aims to enhance trade routes, boost logistical efficiency, and reduce costs across these regions.
The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) aims to establish a reliable and cost-effective cross-border ship-to-rail transit network to complement existing maritime routes. This initiative is designed to enhance efficiency, reduce transportation costs, secure regional supply chains, increase trade accessibility, foster economic cooperation, create jobs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The IMEEC is set to significantly integrate Asia, Europe, and the Middle East (West Asia).
At its early stages, the IMEEC involves numerous stakeholders. From May 15 to 17, an Indian delegation visited the UAE to hold meetings under the Framework Agreement between India and the UAE. This agreement focuses on cooperation to empower and operationalize the IMEEC. The visit included discussions with key UAE entities such as DP World UAE, AD Ports Group, and UAE Customs, led by Ambassador Sunjay Sudhir. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both nations to advancing the IMEEC project and its transformative goals.
The Framework Agreement between India and the UAE was signed on February 13 in Abu Dhabi, witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This agreement outlines cooperation efforts to develop the IMEEC, including exploring opportunities for joint investment and technical collaboration to achieve this goal.
